Birth of a Salesman is the quintessential how-to-sell and sales leadership book, encased within the business conspiracy novel detailing the exploits of fictional author, Vincent Scott. The chapters of his book The Selling Game are strategically placed throughout the narrative as they illustrate lessons on interviewing for the job, sales preparation, gripping introduction, quality fact-finding, effective pitching, solid closing, superior overcoming objections, earning the promotion, battling burnout and leading sales teams that he learned along the road to success.
As Vincent sculpts his book and professionally heads into a pivotal time in his career, he draws upon memories of the clashes, controversy, friends and foes that shaped his rise to power over the last ten years of his life for reference. Along the way, he has had his heart broken, suffered losses, stood up repeatedly to corrupt superiors and been to hell and back, but he is still standing as he leads his team through a dark period.

How Birth Of A Salesman starts…
"Always set your goals higher than you could ever possibly reach. That way, when you barley fall short, you're still better than everyone else." -Vincent Thomas Scott III author The Selling Game

WOW!!!…I have truly enjoyed this. Even if you are not a salesperson this is a very good read. I just flew through this…from the overall teachings and techniques, to the simple-ness of ‘have the right mindset! You are darn right it takes brains, guts and tenacity to get to your goals! (no matter what they are or what you do for a living) The idea of keeping a journal is great, not only to track your successes but to help you learn from and also avoid repeating a mistake.

(The lay out with the kindle version was a little strange, with large page breaks and random numbers, just saying)

I loved the movie quote inserts and references, made this even more fun to read. “They need you right now, but when they don’t, they’ll cast you out. Like a leper. You see, their morals, their code, it’s a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They’re only as good as the world allows them to be. I’ll show you. When the chips are down… these civilized people, they’ll eat each other. See, I’m not a monster. I’m just ahead of the curve.” –The Joker (Heath Ledger) in the Dark Knight

I am not really a sales person but I do sometimes find myself selling stuff at work (people here like to leave me all alone Hahaha!)…so I can still use some of the skills that are laid out in this book. Something as simple as; believe in myself, not hesitating (because it is an enemy) and ACT like you have the world by the balls. No one will know any better .

The story of Vincent woven through this book was refreshing, sad and just WOW… made you just fly through the pages. You laugh with Vincent, celebrate his victories and cry when he hits rock bottom. I really loved the whole book! You will not regret this read, I’m not sure I can say that enough…

Birth of a Salesman eBook Carson Heady Reviews

Approached via Twitter to but and gave it a shot.

Very old school techniques written in a poor style with the only references being to popular movies from the 1980's to 2000's.

Better idea would be to read Dan Pink's To Sell is Human.
Mr. Healy asked me to review his book, since it was available for for $.99. As a reviewer and retailer, I'm always interested in reading what people deem great sales techniques and I was intrigued with the notion that this fictional salesman was going to deliver them.
I need to agree with two previous reviews - one that said the format was not corrected and it reads weird. And the second that Mr Healy needed the help of a good Editor.
Having said that, I gave it three stars. One for the writing process, one for the completion, and one for the fact that he did attempt to deliver sales techniques and hints. However, it's the delivery that disappointed me. I got into the section "The Art of Confidence" and felt like I was being lectured at and Vincent had disappeared. There were way too many examples in each section. I would have liked to see him take his top three points in each section and have Vincent give real life examples and situations and how he resolved them.
If the book was rewritten, tightened up and edited it has the potential to be a 5*.
Excellent sales strategies told in the form of a novel or story. Phenomenal work!
Book is a great read. Carson gets it!
"Birth of a Salesman" doubles as a self help sales book and a fictional account of its author's journey through throw the cut throat culture of corperate America.

The self-help sections have tremendous value because no other sales book concentrates on how to sell with the short sales cycles that most call center environments demand. This book is a absolute must read if you are looking to sharpen your sales skills for a job that requires you to close on the 1st contact. No other sales manual tackles this like "Birth of a Salesman" does.

I have a very simple way to judge fiction. I ask myself "How easy is it for me to stop reading this book?" Its not easy to put this one down. While the story develops slowly throughout the 1st half of the book, it eventually turns into a delightful read on the unforgiving, thankless, and ruthless reality of corporate America.
It took me a little bit to get passed the present tense wording, but once I got into the groove of the read it was interesting. As other reviews have mentioned, this sort of doubles as a self help book and a realistic account of how to get a leg up in the sales world. I know absolutely nothing about sales and marketing, so I am not qualified to comment about how useful it is in terms of marketing. I enjoyed the family moments the most in this novel. It would probably appeal to me more if I knew a bit more about sales.
This book is an inside look at the selling game that, evidently, is not a "game." It is a well-done fictionalized lesson in the professional world of sales and what it takes to succeed. Through the characters the author makes the sales profession complete, real, and startling. Its valuable lessons are in a page turner fictionalized format that is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn the game,or, for anyone who just wants to be a voyeur into an unknown fascinating world. There are some editing problems--but I put content, inspiration, and substance over form--and always will.
